Washington, June 1, 2000 - The Voices of Classic Rock announced today that
they will perform at the Internet Freedom Rally on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol
in Washington, DC on Sunday, June 11. The Voices of Classic Rock is comprised
of lead singers from many of the best known classic rock groups of the 1970's and 1980's
who have joined together to form their own Internet digital record label and musical
channel, r o c k f o r e v e r . c o m . The Internet Freedom Rally performance will feature
five such lead vocalists, playing in support of an "open" Internet unencumbered
by excessive government regulation or access fees.
John Cafferty of the Beaver Brown band |
Slated to perform in Washington are John
Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, Peter Rivera (formerly of Rare Earth), David
Jenkins (of Pablo Cruise), Joe Lynn Turner (formerly of Deep Purple and Rainbow),
and Jimi Jamison (of Survivor). Collectively these classic rockers have sung lead
vocals on 20 Top Forty hits, 14 Top Twenty hits, and 10 Top Ten hits. Between
them they also boast four Platinum albums and one Triple Platinum Album, as well
as the soundtrack themes for four major motion pictures. They are the original
singers, singing their original songs.
"In addition to being an important cause which we hold close to our heart given
our blossoming web venture, we are looking forward to playing outdoors in Washington,
DC and providing the Rally and its participants two hours of nothing but hits,"
said r o c k f o r e v e r . c o m Manager Charlie Schmitt. "What could be better than an
important cause, a summer afternoon on the Capitol lawn, and the music that has embodied
so much history of the last 30 years. We're proud to feature our entertainers poised
to now help make New Media history for the future."
Dave Jenkins of Pablo Cruise |
David Jenkins of Pablo Cruise will
leadoff the June 11 concert. In 1973, Dave co-founded this group which personified
the smooth California sound. It was in 1977 that the band realized critical commercial
success with its Platinum album "A Place In the Sun," that produced the Top
Ten Hit "Whatcha Gonna Do?" Platinum status would again be achieved with
Pablo Cruise's follow-up effort "Worlds Away," which drove "Love Will
Find A Way" into the Top Ten and "Don't Want To Live Without It" into
the Top 30. Dave's final Top 20 hit occurred in 1981 with the Number 13 single
"Cool Love." In addition to his Pablo Cruise legacy, Dave Jenkins has
also toured extensively with the Doobie Brothers and a variety of other well-known talents.
Peter Rivera formerly of Rare Earth |
Peter Rivera is the voice of such Motown
classics as "Get Ready" and "I Just Want To Celebrate." The
original lead singer/drummer of Rare Earth 1969-1975 led his band into rock and roll history
in 1969, when they were "reportedly the first white act signed to black-owned"
Motown Records. "Get Ready," the group's first single shot to Number 4 on
the Billboard Charts, to be followed soon thereafter by the Number 7 hit "I Know
I'm Losing You." "Born to Wander" cracked the Billboard Top 20, as did
"Hey, Big Brother." And the classic party song "I Just Want To
Celebrate," an anthem of its time, topped out at Number 7 on the Billboard Pop
Charts. To their credit, in addition to charting as a pop-rock act, Rare Earth enjoyed
crossover success with four R&B chart positions, too. Today Peter Rivera, in addition
to his work with r o c k f o r e v e r . c o m , is
the lead vocalist of the Classic Rock All-Stars.
Joe Lynn Turner of Deep Purple |
Joe Lynn Turner is the personification of
the album rocker. In addition to fronting his own band, Fandango, Joe Lynn was the
lead vocalist for the Ritchie Blackmore and Roger Glover-led band Rainbow. Blackmore
and Glover were founders of the legendary British rock group Deep Purple. In Rainbow,
though, with Joe Lynn's powerful vocals, they found commercial success and emerged
among the early stars of music video on MTV. Their singles "Street of Dreams"
and "Stone Cold," in addition to moving into the Top 20 of the Rock Charts and
the Top 40 of the Pop Charts, were MTV staples. In 1989, after Glover and Blackmore
reunited Deep Purple, Joe Lynn Turner became Purple's vocalist. In addition to touring
as their front man for five years, Joe Lynn also performed on the Deep Purple "Slaves
and Masters" album released in 1990. Joe Lynn Turner has recently released a solo
album "Joe Lynn Turner Uncovered," which he is supporting with tour dates in Europe and Asia.
Jimi Jamison of Survivor |
Jimi Jamison owns the
distinctive voice that electrified the Rocky IV theme "Burning Heart," propelling it
to Number Two on the Billboard Charts. The lead singer of Survivor joined the band
after its debut hit "Eye of the Tiger," and proceeded to lead the band to five more
Top Twenty hits (including "Burning Heart"). His first album effort, "Vital Signs,"
went Platinum and pushed "Can't Hold Back" to Number 13 on the charts; "High On You"
to Number 8; and "The Search is Over" to Number 4. The follow-up album, "When
Seconds Count" sent the single "Is This Love" to Number 9. After that recording
Jimi left Survivor to pursue solo projects, which included writing and singing "I'm
Always Here," the musical theme of the hit series Baywatch. In March of 2000 Jimi
reunited with the original members of Survivor to tour with REO Speedwagon and Styx.
John Cafferty |
It took nearly ten years - from 1972 to 1982 - of constant touring
on the East Coast Club circuit for John Cafferty
and the Beaver Brown Band to realize their dream of a recording contract. Indeed,
in 1982, John (or "JC" as he is commonly known) was commissioned to write and perform
the musical soundtrack for a relatively low-budget independent motion picture. The
movie, "Eddie and the Cruisers," went on to become a huge cult and mainstream rock
classic, and nurtured a Triple Platinum album for JC and his band. It was John's raspy
voice that propelled the movie's theme "On the Darkside" to Number One on the Billboard
Rock charts, while the movie's second hit "Tender Years" - featuring sax player Michael
Antunes (who appeared as Wendal in the movie) - rose into the Top Ten on the AC Charts.
The band's follow-up album "Tough All Over," would push it's title track into the Rock
Charts top spot again; while the single "C-I-T-Y" ran into the Top Twenty on the Pop
Charts. John will close the Capitol show, with his full Beaver Brown Band as the back-up.
Typically, at the conclusion of a Voices of Classic Rock concert the crowd will also be
treated to an all-star encore jam, with all of the singers on stage jamming to their
favorite rock classics. "We hope the crowd in DC will compel a great encore jam," said
Schmitt, "the setting is perfect and we'll help the audience to send a message that
this is an important issue."
