The Voices Appear in the Other Side of the World |
Okinawa, Japan -- April 5, 2000 -- The Voices of Classic Rock, featuring
Mickey Thomas and Starship, Larry Hoppen of Orleans, Jimi Jamison of
Survivor, Bobby Kimball of Toto, and Mike Reno of Loverboy, kicked-off a
five-day, four-show tour of U.S. Air Force installations in the Far East
April 5th with a show a Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa. The show was
produced outdoors on the historic island, location of the last great air and
sea battle of World War II.
"It's a surreal place," said Starship drummer Daryl "Pelican" Verdusco,
"beautiful, historic, almost a throw-back to the 1950's. We love playing
venues like this -- they're exotic locations...with a great golf course!"
Loverboy's Mike Reno is quick to add, "and the crowd is our demographic, they
love our music and we appreciate their response...there's nothing better than
a good show on a base."
Indeed, the Voices of Classic Rock will continue their far east tour with
shows on April 6 at NAF Atsugi outside Tokyo, April 7 at Missawa Air Base in
the north of Japan, and April 8 at Osan Air Base near Seoul, Korea. "It's an
intense run; traveling half-way across the world and playing four shows in
four nights," noted Toto's Bobby Kimball, "but the Armed Forces always have
great crowds and considering all they do for us -- it's the least we can do
for them."
The group took an extra day off in Seoul for sightseeing and
shopping before returning to the United States and preparing for its next run
of dates April 19 at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, April 20 at the
House of Blues in Orlando, April 21 at the Greater Greensboro Chrysler
Classic, and April 25 at EuroDisney in Paris France.
"It's a lot of traveling," said Survivor's Jimi Jamison, "but you don't
get better sushi than in Japan...a little sushi and a little rock and roll --
it doesn't get any better than that!"
