For the album's title track, Gary U.S. Bonds turned to
Little Steven (Van Zandt), who wrote, arranged, played lead guitar, and produced it,
some of the same tasks he had undertaken for Bonds' previous two albums. As a result,
the performance had much of the drive of the anthemic songs on Little Steven's solo albums.
For the rest, on which he was co-billed with his backup band, the American Men, Bonds
was for the first time his own boss, and he proved he could come up with sturdy
rock & roll songs, although nothing to match his early hits or the songs Bruce
Springsteen wrote for him in the early '80s. |
