Dickey Betts' first solo album, Highway Call (1974), was something of a lark between Allman Brothers albums, but with The Allmans' split in 1976, he formed a backup band, Great Southern, and released this, an attempt to launch a full-fledged solo career. Betts exactly recreated the original instrumentation of The Allmans in Great Southern ? two lead guitars ("Dangerous Dan" Toler joined him), keyboards, bass, and two drummers. And the sound bore a notable resemblance to The Allmans songs Betts had contributed. |
