It's interesting that Clutch has managed to come to resemble
Black Sabbath in tone by this album ? it's an attractive enough
riff on the basic early-'70s Sabbath that it overcomes some of
the more immediate negative reactions. Fortunately, the band doesn't
stay entirely in Sabbath territory. Throughout Pure Rock Fury the
approach is flat-out, balls-to-the-wall heavy metal, with an accent
on heavy. Among other influences detectable along the way is the
sarcastic spirit of Frank Zappa, and one might be tempted to include
a few off-the-wall suggestions, but pinpointing blame or blessings
has to stop somewhere. Suffice it to say that this is Clutch's homage
to the dark rock gods of yesteryear, then, and move on. Just remember
to crank it to 11 for this one. |
