Rudiments are combinations of single, double and multiple stokes combined to form unique patterns. These stroke combinations are the foundation on which snare drum playing is based.
Rudiments were originally developed and used by drummers in military organizations who played drum beats or 'cadences' for soldiers to march to.
In addition, military drummers were often to called upon to send messages and signals in the same manner that bugles and other horns were utilized.
Rudiments are to the snare drummer what scales and arpeggios are to the pianist - the basis for all technique studies.
There are many 'sets' of rudiments. Scottish pipe band drummers have a unique style and set of rudiments. There is another set of rudiments developed by Swiss Army drummers.
The rudiments included in this section are the official rudiments of The National Association of Rudimental Drummers (N.A.R.D.) founded in the United States by William F. Ludwig, owner of the Ludwig Drum Company.
