Remember . . . Rudiments are combinations
of single, double and multiple stokes combined to form unique patterns. These stroke
combinations are the foundation on which snare drum playing is based.

Rolls are certainly one of 3/4 key rudiments -- they actually are
components of other rudiments (Ruffs, Ratamacues, etc). Several great players have
written instruction books demonstrating their theories on how to apply rudiments to
the drumset. Joe Cusatis, jazz player (long time accompaniest for pianist Peter Nero),
owner of the Modern Drum Shop in NYC (mecca for working pros in NYC) and drum teacher,
contributes the following from his WB book, "Rudimental Patterns, Full Drumset
Studies for the Modern Drummer". |
