Re-visit the Introduction to e-MusicLab for a look at the program's "Point of View" and for a look
at the qualifications and experiences of John Gates, the originator of
e-MusicLab
- Instruction
-- the heart and soul of the program
- The instruction in e-MusicLab is designed by professionals...
- Central to the curriculum design of e-MusicLab is the ability to deliver,
via the internet, quality professional
music instruction and performance demonstrations to any student anywhere in the world.
- The instruction is based on the personal playing and teaching experiences of drumset/percussion
nationally recognized faculty from the University of North Texas (Ed Soph),
Manhattan School of Music (John Riley), Berklee School of Music (Jackie Santos), all
recognized as among the finest music schools in the country.
- The instruction design is based on the personal experiences of school music educators and administrators.
(some research has been done -- more is required)
- The instruction is based on the personal playing and teaching experiences some of the most widely
recognized professional players -- see our Advisory Board.
- The instruction is NOT limited in range -- it starts with the beginner and continues through
challenges for the most advanced professional player.
- National Standards -- while other music instruction websites cite the MENC?s National Standards
and DOE's National Educational Technology Goals
none has a component to address the requirements for evaluating musical performances, and understanding music
in relation to history and culture. e-MusicLab will meet those in it's "Styles and Analysis" and "Ask a Pro" sections.
- Warners Brothers Content
-- Through licensing agreements with Warner Brothers Publications, Inc
e-MusicLab will have access to the following:
- The DCI instructional/inspirational video catalogue. The largest collection of videos featuring
the finest WORLD-CLASS drummers, guitarists, bassists, and keyboard players. This is the source of the
e-MusicLab MASTER CLASS instruction.
- Warner Brothers Educational Publications -- from drums/percussion instruction books to instrumental solo and
ensemble literature, to big band jazz arrangements for School Stage Bands, Warner Brothers is the largest publisher of
music education materials.
- Website Design
-- e-MusicLab is being redesigned from the ground up. We have
decided that, rather than depending on an (obscure) third-party plugin like Beatnik (which just announced
it will no longer support updating for new browsers) e-MusicLab will be re-done
using Macromedia Director/ShockWave, products that have been used for years!!
Graphics
The use of gratuitous graphics on a website greatly impact the site performance and, as a consequence, the
user's experience. Following the aforementioned "Less is More" philosophy of site design, e-MusicLab
will be limiting the use of graphics on the website to two groups:
- Graphics that enhance the instruction
- Graphics that enhance the revenue stream - ads, partners' logos, etc.
Technology
- Audio, MIDI, and Video files will be integrated into the Shockwave applications. This will allow
e-MusicLab to retain control over the files as the user will not be able to download them to their hard-drive.
- The purpose of technology in e-MusicLab is to create an ensemble-like environment (rather than
playing alone) for the learner. Using new media technology the learner will have significantly
more control over these files. -- tempo, key, adding/subtracting instruments from the playback
-- and ultimately over their learning experience.
- The Community
- The Industry -- Representatives from music industry manufacturers, when asked by John Gates at The
Percussion Arts Conference (Nov 2000) and The International Jazz Educators Convention (Jan 2001)
expressed real interest in being represented on the e-MusicLab site
and also indicated they would participate in some kind of reciprocal program.
- The Education Community
- Music Schools and educators have shown great interest as well, e-MusicLab can represent the schools'
percussion programs in ways they cannot represent themselves in their "University website"
- Professional Music Education Organizations, MENC, IAJE, PAS, etc.
- e-MusicLab as a commercial enterprise
- An underlying facet of the instructional model is for e-MusicLab to promote the sales from the WB publications the lesson
material is derived from -- "if you liked those video clips/book click here to buy the complete video/book"
- e-MusicLab's users will be "highly qualified" internet users and, as such, should be valuable targets for advertisers
including clothing, food, alcohol (the adult learners), etc., as well as the music-related record companies, instrument
manufacturers, etc.
- e-MusicLab will enter into affiliate programs with instrument retailers, CD sales sites (CDNOW) and realize commissions
from sales derived by e-MusicLab links.
